Renowned NYC musical improviser William Parker and his partner Patricia Nichols will be in Ottawa for several days. On Thursday, they'll have a free public discussion at Carleton University about the role of music and art in community formation. Both have had decades of experience: Nicholson began putting together musical events in 1981, when she organized and choreographed A Thousand Cranes Opera at Dag Hammerskjold Plaza for the opening of the UN Special Sessions on Disarmament. She and Parker worked together in the 1980s to to help organize the Sound Unity Festivals, which brought together European, Asian and American musicians and dancers who work with jazz and other improvised music. They'll also appear in a music/dance performance Thursday evening at the Carleton University Art gallery with percussionist Jesse Stewart. On Friday, Parker will teach a free public masterclass on improvisation at Carleton University, and then will again perform, in concerts with Stewart and baritone saxophonist David Mott.

Thursday-Sunday, March 13-16: Monty Python's SPAMALOT
Orpheus Musical Theatre Society does Monty Python at Centrepointe Theatre? What more could you ask for? How about coconuts and Spam? French taunters? Prams (a-lot)? Scantily clad "Laker Girls"? How about me in a sparkly silver codpiece...? Wait, no. Try to get that last image out of your mind. The show, by Python alumnus Eric Idle, is a deeply silly musical version of the movie The Holy Grail, and so far, it's been only rave reviews for this production.
