Do any of those serve the Fish 'n' Chips on newspaper? I checked the menus, but they didn't say...
I find the Tartan Pub on Innes Road in Orleans pretty good too!
Well Cat... here are some answers from our Twitter readers re: newsprint:Sarah says: "The Landing in Kemptville uses real newspaper. Also does NL style dressing."Rita says: "Whalesbone has funky brown paper takeout bags and such not nspaper"Kaitlin: "there was a discussion on @ottawafoodies about this awhile ago. newsprint used nowadays is waxed. elephant & castle used to."
Give Cat's Fish & Chips a try...319 St Laurent Blvd
OMG IT WAS AWFUL, We did try Cat's Fish and Chips. Don't bother trying the food out, it's not worth it at all, you're not missing out on anything. My husband and I went there one evening for take out fish and chips. The fish was wrapped in old newspaper (dirty) the fish was falling apart and soooo greasy, the potatoes were cold and way too fat, they tasted like 'old grease'. When we called to complain, they told us, "Well, don't come back". AND GUESS WHAT, WE WILL NEVER BE BACK THERE EVER, EVER, AGAIN and oh, I fogot to tell you about their coleslaw, it was soggy, and swimming in mayonnaise dressing, that tasted sour. On top of all this we waited over an hour sitting at their front entrance miniature bar stools for this disgusting food. Had we read reviews ahead of time, we would have saved ourselves, time, and money. We ended up throwing the food out in the garbage, and going to another restaurant for take out.
I went for the first and LAST time to Cat's on St. Laurent at Beechwood. It was disgusting and overpriced. (I think $15 for fish and chips for one person is too much.)The fish was cooked so much that the batter was dark, dark brown and the haddock had no flavour left; the chips were unpeeled potatoes cooked so much that there was no potato left on the inside; the cole slaw was ordinary and unremarkable. The restaurant looks like an old beer bar — scratched arborite tables, scratched wooden bar chairs, a floor that hadn't been recovered in 30 years. The waitress asked if I wanted GRAVY with my fish and chips! GRAVY WITH FISH???One of the items on the menu is "real Kraft Dinner"! This alone indicates their lack of respect for food.I will never go back there again. It is the worst dining experience I have had in years. It a word, it is disgusting.
re: AlallandumanI think so facts may be in order. I have a menu here, and the Fish & Chips at Cat's are priced at $12.92 for a huge portion (Same as served at the Glen) with alot of chips too. The fish is battered in a dark beer making the batter dark.As for the decor. If you want to eat at a fine dining place, then you don't go to a F & C place. The decor is like you would find in many a house in the Maritimes, with fish nets draped around the bar, oak tables, except a couple of poured cement ones.Gravy with Chips? what a concept. Just because you don't like it, maybe others do. It is the waitresses job to offer, all you have to do is say no if you don't want it. As for real KD, my kids love KD and I like a restaurant that will offer them food they will finish instead of half the meal being wasted.
so agree with Alallanduman!!!
Lapointe's in Bell's Corners is disgusting. Go to Westboro or Kanata. Different owners.
Quinn's Pub on Bank Street !
