While all of the attention this week has been on the demise of the Dirty Bird in Hintonburg, let us not forget the other area KFC's that also closed this week, and in previous years. They kicked the proverbial 21-piece bucket, yet no wakes were held, no articles were written about their loss.
May they rest in peace. Or rather, may they rest in delicious fried finger-licking good pieces.
First, besides the Hintonburg KFC, three other local KFC's closed in the past week:

The Kentucky Fried Chicken at 690 Bank Street, where the last chicken was fried several years ago and was replaced by a Rogers outlet. (Anybody have a photo?)
In Bells Corners, what was once a mecca of fried chicken at 134 Robertson Road is now a great place for pad thai:
At 190 Dalhousie Street in the Byward Market, Colonel Saunders has been ousted by the Restaurant Casa do Churrasco. Did a KFC bucket once rotate on top of that pole?
Any more recently lost KFC's we should list here?

Wasn't the current Sukhothai location in Bells Corners a former KFC from a few years ago?
ReplyDeleteIf movie theatre concessions count, the one at Famous Players Silver City. Also, just across the street, I believe there was a KFC at the Gloucester Shopping Centre that's gone now.

ReplyDeleteThere was a KFC on Bank St in Glebe. It is now a Rogers store. Its been gone for a few years.
ReplyDeletePortuguese place on Dalhousie used to be a KFC (still obvious) though it shut down back when they were Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Jenn - why am I fascinated by the KFC's? I'm not really -- but I am fascinated by *the public's fascination/interest in KFC's* -- if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteFor example, yesterday on Twitter, there were more uses of the "#KFCWake" hashtag than "#DOOttawa".
And when I originally posted this article via Twitter last night, it generated a couple dozen comments -- which is very high for a Saturday night at 11pm.
All this for a chain of restaurants that most people never eat at -- that's why they're closing, after all!

ReplyDeleteI have fond memories of the Red Barn restaurants. Used to go on Sundays with my family when I was a teen in Toronto. There could be a new theme there!

Whew, if you're going back as far as the one on Dalhousie, then there also used to be one on Merivale where (until recently) the Dave's Part Mart is/was.
