Rant of the Day: Ottawa's pedestrian safety campaign

Blogger Eric Darwin has a great rant today on his West Side Action blog. He's highly critical of the City of Ottawa's pedestrian safety campaign, pointing out that currently on the City's web site, there's currently lots of suggestions for pedestrians to avoid getting hit by cars - but none for motorists.

"It seems pedestrian safety is 100% a pedestrian responsibility. So if you get run over ... you know who's fault it is," writes Darwin. Read his entire pedestrian rant here...

I drive as well as walk in the city and I agree that pedestrian safety is up to the pedestrian. When I drive, there are so many things to watch out for that I can't be trying to pay attention to some pedestrian crossing outside of the crosswalk or crossing against the signal. Also, when the signal is flashing red, don't start to cross! That's the time that us drivers should have to make our right hand turn before the light changes and the steady stream of traffic from our left starts. While waiting for the light to change before you cross, stand on the sidewalk, NOT ON THE PAVEMENT! One of these days some idiot driver will want to play bowling with a bunch of pedestrians standing on the pavement, waiting to cross.

  2. I've also noticed there aren't many crosswalks for blind people in Ottawa...
