Does Ottawa have any chlorine-free pools?

Update: Please see our Ottawa Swimming Guide for a list of salt water pools in Ottawa.

A reader asks: "I am looking for an indoor pool in Ottawa that is chlorine free. Other cities have ozonated pools and salt pools. Does Ottawa have one anywhere? I don't think any of the city pools are, but are there private-public pools (ie clubs, spas, hotels) that are? I have chronic respiratory problems and can't use a chlorine pool. Thanks for helping in this search."

If you know of any chlorine-free pools in Ottawa, please leave a note in the comments below.

  1. I believe the Jewish Community Centre has a salt-water pool now. Also there is a lovely salt-water pool in Aylmer. As for Ottawa's public pools, well, we're pretty significantly behind the times, loading up on the chlorine as much as possible

  2. The previous poster is correct that the JCC uses a salt water chlorinator - however please note that there is no such thing as a "chlorine-free pool" within Health Canada jurisdiction. The salt chlorination system uses an alternate method of generating chlorine, and has a drastically lower amount, however it is still "chlorination". Health Canada requires either chlorine or bromine as disinfectant.

One of the biggest marketing deceptions to date is that salt pools offer an ECO Friendly alternative to chlorine. This is not true. Salt chlorinators produce a highly aggressive and reactive yellow green chlorine gas on site that readily combines with organic matter to form harmful disinfection byproducts, the predominant form being Bromoform. Bromoform is a confirmed carcinogen in animals and highly toxic to the environment and aquatic life. It has been classified as a persistant organic pollutant.

  5. Saw on Twitter today (July 21, 2010) that the JCC pool is closed for maintenance for part of the summer.
