Ask OttawaStart: The August Civic Holiday

David K. from Orlando, Florida asks: "Is Civic Day celebrated everywhere in Canada? Will it be a legal holiday on Monday, 7 Aug, since it falls on a Sunday in 2006?"

OttawaStart responds:
  • According to Wikipedia, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan have civic holidays on the first Monday in August. In 2006, it's August 7, 2006.
  • In Ottawa, the Civic Holiday is known official as "Colonel By Day". Colonel By founded "Bytown", the original name for the city we now call Ottawa.
  • On Monday, August 7, the Bytown Museum is celebrating Colonel By Day with lots of heritage games, food, demonstrations, and other activities. Admission is free. Click here for details.
  • Here's a list of holiday schedule changes at the City of Ottawa. Garbage pick-up is delayed by a day, OC Transpo runs Sunday service, etc.
